Markel
Irizar

After overcoming testicular cancer in 2002, Markel Irizar turned pro with few aspirations for himself and has made a career of working selflessly for others. He is positive, always smiling and exuding gratefulness in everything he does. Markel is a powerful rouleur, a cyclist that can do a little of everything for the team and excels in the classics. At age 39, Markel is the veteran rider of Trek-Segafredo, and 2019 marks his 16th professional season. Markel pulled off a memorable victory in 2011: with a motivated team behind him, he won the five-day Vuelta a Andalucía in his home country. A gracious repay to an amiable teammate who gives his all, every day, for the team.

Who inspires you?

My wife.

Who has been the funniest teammate you have ever had?

For me, there are two: Edward Theuns and Jarlinson Pantano.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would that be?

I would like to be born again and become a cyclist but not anymore Markel Irizar. I would like to be someone like Peter Sagan.
