Sergio takes early season wins

Sergio Mantecon starts his 2017 with double wins

Few ride with the passion and energy that Sergio Mantecon commits to his sport. Read Sergio’s report here on his early season racing!

From Sergio:

I always like the first races of the season. They are a mix between early season jitters, and the first important test after the hard training of the preseason.

First race was Costa Blanca Bike Race, it´s the first UCI duo and stage race of the season. It’s also the perfect opportunity for racing with strong rivals, riding awesome trails, and enjoying the good weather. My couple was Jan Skarnitz from Trek Czech Republic. We connected very well during the race and won 4 of 4 stages in addition to the overall classification.

Second race was Lanzarote 4Stages on the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is an atypical MTB race, no technical aspects, and a very fast track inside a moon like paradise between volcanoes.  The format is similar to a road race, which makes makes it a tactical outing that doesn’t always favor the strongest rider.

Stages 1 and 2 were the shorter, which is good for an XCO rider like me, and I was able to win by a comfortable gap

Stage 3 was a Time Trial race, around 1h just yourself vs your power, decisive stage for the overall. I won with more than 1-min to the 2nd rider.

Stage 4 was the XL stage. 88km with a lot of climbing where anything can happen… my tactic was control the race and secure the overall win.

I´m very pleased with this start of the season. I have a lot of confidence coming into 2017, and I’m looking forward to giving great things back to the Trek Family!
