TFR heads to Cairns, Australia for World Championships
Australia is know to have some of the most dangerous critters in the world. Add to that list one of the most dangerous XC courses in the world.
The team felt the full force of the track, with the day’s best result coming from Emily Batty in 7th place. Anton Cooper came in with a hard fought 16th. Both riders looked to be in contention for top-5 results, but both suffered serious crashes. A strong determination by the duo kept them in the race, fighting for great finishes.
Emily Batty has had an incredibly consistent season, staying in the top-10 for many of the World Cup races this year. Coming into Australia, Emily was looking good to repeat her incredible performance at last year’s World Championship, which saw a podium finish.
The race was going well for Emily, with a top-5 looking like a strong possibility, until a serious crash took her down. Quick to get back to it, Emily continued her fight, coming in at 7th. Further attention would show an large cut on her knee, requiring some to look away, and Emily to receive surgery.
Anton Cooper is in the midst of a dream season. The Kiwi came into the race looking to put another solid result in his year of first the elite category.
I felt in a great place all week, physically and mentally and I think that showed in fast lap time I set during the teams relay on Wednesday. That also gave me a good confidence boost heading into Saturdays main event and I was determined to put on a strong showing my final event of the season. I had a great start, entering the first singletrack in 3rd and maintaining my place in the top 10 for almost the entirety of the race. I felt great and was beginning to build into my late race charge with a top 5 position within sight. Unfortunately I made a small error down the notorious Jacob's ladder and paid for it with a beat up bike, knees and a broken saddle. "
"I made my way to the tech zone where my mechanic Matt fixed my bike and I continued on my way to finish 16th. Very happy with my legs and performance but not with my final finish position. I'll take nothing but positives from it though!"
Sergio Mantecon has fought his way through a very challenging season. Injury and bad luck has plagued him, with the trip to Australia showing now mercy. Sergio was not able to finish, but will look to 2018 for a season of redemption.
Evie Richards has experienced a terrific season, with a win and numerous podiums in the World Cup scene. Sadly the World Championships were not to be, with the Brit suffering in the conditions, and not finishing.
It’s been an awesome season! Keep up with the team via Instagram as they prepare for 2018!
