Toon Aerts and Katie Compton ride to podium results
Katie Compton made the World Cup in Germany a memorable one by taking third place in a hectic race. After riding with the lead group, a costly mistake allowed for Sanne Cant to get away, and Helen Wyman to come around to fill in the second spot. In Sunday’s DVV, after leading the race for most of the day with compatriot Ellen Noble, the duo were caught by World Champion Sanne Cant in the last lap. Cant distanced both riders, and took the win over Nobel in second, and Compton in third.
"I’ve had some bad luck for the World Cup races this season so earning 3rd at Saturday's Zeven felt great and it was nice to be on the podium again. For Sunday's Hamme, I have to say the course one of the funnest cross courses I've raced in a while. I raced smart thinking about the overall for the DVV and making sure I had a clean race with a decent result. I didn’t have the legs at the end to fight for first or even sprint for 2nd, but I was happy with another podium on a weekend."
Toon Aerts has been a very consistent attendee on the podium this year, and Saturday’s World Cup was no different. Toon was in the race for third along with Corne van Kessel and Michael Vanthourenhout for most of the day. In the last third of the race, Toon put the gas on and distanced the group. Corne would eventually take the fourth spot in a sprint.
"The track was a lot different than in 2016. Same corner and hills, but the wet conditions made for a very hard day on the bike. It was mud from the first corner to the last! I am loving the arrival of true cyclocross weather!"
