How it happened
A late breakaway looked set to take the spoils at the third stage of Vuelta a Burgos but was caught on the line by Elisa Balsamo (2nd) and Lorena Wiebes (1st).
Multiple attacks punctuated the relatively flat day, the most significant of which was a seven-rider breakaway which came around 25km to go. The group built a solid advantage and looked poised to fight for the win, however the peloton played heartbreakers as they caught the escapees mere meters from the finish line in Aranda de Duero.
In Elisa’s words
The breakaway went and we knew that SD Worx has the fastest sprinter so we left them to do the work. I just need to say thank you to my teammates, especially Lucinda as she put me in the perfect position for the sprint. I’m happy about the second place, at the moment Wiebes is just stronger than me but we will keep on working.
