Balsamo second at inaugural Copenhagen Sprint

Elisa Balsamo sprinted to second place at the first edition of the new Danish WorldTour one-day race.

The streets of Copenhagen were transformed into a fast and furious race circuit which set the stage for a chaotic finale to the new sprint race.

Our Lidl-Trek women rallied together to bring Balsamo back to the bunch after a crash earlier in the race and were able to keep her race as the speed, and nerves, intensified on the city center lap.

The Team’s sprint train started to move up and make their presence known going into the final two kilometers of the race but, ultimately, a hectic finale the former world champion had to settle for a second-place finish behind Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime).

In Elisa’s own words…

It was a really hard race and also a really stressful one especially the laps, local circuits like this are always a big fight. They were really technical, but overall, I think we did a good race. There was, obviously a lot of sprinters in the bunch and everyone wanted to stay in the first position so there was a lot of nerves. Unluckily, I had also a crash, but it was not really bad, so I could sprint and, of course, I definitely would like to come back to try and get the win here.

We are always here to win, but also a podium is a nice result. I think we just missed a little bit of organisation in our lead out but we can be happy and take a lot away from this to improve in the future.
