Ciccone continues solid run of results at Tirreno-Adriatico
The Trek-Segafredo rider proved to be one of the strongest at the Italian stage race, finishing fifth overall.
After seven stages and 1,169 kms, the Race of the Two Seas crowned Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) its new king today. Meanwhile, 37 seconds behind the Slovenian, Giulio Ciccone finished among a star studded top ten which makes his final result shine brighter.
After his second place overall and stage win at the Volta Valenciana, Giulio gave further proof of his consistent early-season form at Tirreno-Adriatico. His General Classification result combined with the second place he obtained on Friday in the queen stage in Sassotetto provide two more solid performances to take confidence from when reviewing his season so far.
My balance for this Tirreno-Adriatico is good. I knew I had a good condition, that I could aspire to a strong performance and result. My goal was a stage win, and I came very close to it, and a top five in the final classification, which came in the end. It was a good week of racing, both for me and the whole team; we can be satisfied.
This result does not come by chance. I worked hard in the winter, getting through it without any problems, and I think I am finally back to my real level. I started the season with strong motivation, and in these first races, Volta Valenciana and Tirreno-Adriatico, I am reaping the fruits of my labor. The off season also served to reset the work with the Team, to renew our common goals. The last two years have been very difficult, but the Team has never left me alone. Thanks to them I have regained that serenity that is allowing me to express my best values. There has always been solid mutual trust; now we are getting the results we both expect. So, I am very happy with the result I achieved in this race.
Next week I will recover my strength before Volta a Catalunya. Then I will complete an altitude training camp with the team. I will return to racing in Belgium, at Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Then, the Giro d’Italia will come.
