Clara celebrates her top result since joining Lidl-Trek at the start of the year
How it happened
After the devastating crash and abandon of Elisa Balsamo on the first stage, Copponi moved from leadout rider to Lidl-Trek’s designated sprinter. The third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos, a lumpy route of 123km from Roa de Duero to Melgar de Fernamental, was largely uneventful for the most part. After the early breakaway was established SD-Worx took on the responsibility to control it, whilst Lidl-Trek stayed out of trouble in the bunch. As the finish approached, Clara moved towards the front of the group along with her teammates, fortunately well positioned to avoid a large crash 1.4km from the finish. Lucinda Brand brought Clara to the front at the perfect time, and from there Clara could use her sprinter’s instinct to full effect to sprint from the a great wheel to finish second behind winner Lorena Wiebes.
Clara’s opinion
“Today’s ride was fast but boring. I spent a lot of time at the back in the beginning because the bunch was a bit hectic and I needed to take it easy. They fought in the beginning to make a breakaway and then SD-Worx controlled the whole race. The last 20kms were really fast, I found my teammates and we tried to stay in the best position as possible. We knew that at 3km to go we had to be in the front. I really trusted Lucinda at the end and I followed her until the last corner before taking a sprinter’s wheel.
I’m really happy with this 2nd place, but especially with my shape of this week, after some health issues I can find myself again and enjoy being on the bike. Thanks to the girls for today’s work and big hugs to Elisa!”
