Jonny Milan took second place at Bemer Cyclassics behind Olav Kooij (Visma–Lease a Bike).
Despite a strong comeback, Jonathan Milan had to settle for second place in the Bemer Cyclassics in Hamburg, Germany. Kooij managed to put his wheel in front of the Italian sprinter from Lidl-Trek, while Biniam Girmay (Intermarché–Wanty) came third.
Milan was one of the pre-race favorites and the condition he came into the race with, could have taken the 23-year-old to the top step of the podium in the German classic but, by Jonny’s own admission, “every sprint is a story in itself”.
The race in Jonny’s words 🎤
Today's second place confirms that I feel good, that my condition ahead of the European Championships is still good and that makes me satisfied. I think that with my legs today, I could have gone further than second place. But, we know, every sprint is a story in itself.
I always say that and today, the way the race was decided in the last 300 metres, the chaos of the final sprint, prevented me from showing everything I had. I found myself boxed in and although my comeback was strong, it didn't succeed to one hundred percent. Congrats to Kooij, he really did a great sprint.
Every result has to be accepted and no doubt that also today's race is an opportunity to improve and learn. Once again, we rode as a great team, we just missed the icing on the cake.
