Trek Future Racing is looking for the talent of tomorrow with state-of-the-art tools

Trek Factory Racing’s commitment to sustainable athlete development is expanding through a unique global talent scouting program

At the end of 2022 Trek launched Trek Future Racing, a new squad focused primarily on developing young cross country mountain bike racers. The team serves as Trek Factory Racing’s official feeder team.

To expand its mission, Trek Future Racing is introducing a talent scouting program. The goal of this program is to responsibly help young riders on their way to successful careers. The team uses a holistic and healthy approach to rider development.

“We want to support young cyclists and clubs in having even more fun with the sport by accessing our know-how and, above all, to help them adjust training loads with the general health and long-term career development of young athletes in mind,” says Tim Vanderjeugd, Director Sports Marketing at Trek.

Trek Future Racing is using state-of-the-art technology to help find the best riders of tomorrow.

To reach as many young cyclists as possible, Trek Future Racing relies on Trek’s global store network. Talent scouting events will be regularly held at select stores. The first camp took place at the Trek Bicycle store in Fürth, Germany, in the fall of 2022 with more than 40 participants selected from several hundred applicants.

In order to realize talent scouting on such a scale, the team relies on state-of-the-art analysis tools with the help of Trainalyzed and Moxy.

The Moxy sensor performs non-invasive, valid performance diagnostics. It measures the oxygen saturation in the muscles via a sensor. The analysis tools required for this were developed by Trainalyzed, which has extensive experience in the analysis process, having been relying on modern near-infrared spectroscopy since 2017.

Through our project and broad orientation, we have the opportunity to act here in the sense of athlete health and to take off pressure.

- Bernd Reutemann, Trek Future Racing team manager

The Trek Future Racing talent scouting process is simple:

  • Step 1: Online application to acquire basic data.
  • Step 2: Invitation to a test day at a regional Trek store, where Trek Future Racing staff perform diagnostics with Trainalyzed/Moxy, and provide evaluation and training recommendations.
  • Step 3: Evaluation of results and admission into the Trek Talent Community.

All riders who receive an invitation to a test day will automatically join the Trek Talent Community and benefit from the services and special offers provided to the community by the program’s partners.

Trek Future Racing took on the Mediterranean Epic earlier this year.

The scouting process’ focus on performance data might be strong, but it is not the only decisive factor. The team behind the Trek Future Racing talent scouting program also evaluates riders based on their personal development potential and social maturity, thus taking a holistic approach that emphasizes not only performance potential, but the ability to train and develop sustainably.

“Experience shows that athletes often train at too high intensities and aim for great success too quickly at a young age. Through our project and broad orientation, we have the opportunity to act here in the sense of athlete health and to take off pressure” says Bernd Reutemann, Trek Future Racing’s team manager.

For 2023, stops are planned in Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, Italy and the United States, among other countries, with the goal of being able to support more than 1,000 enthusiastic young cyclists by the end of the year.
