Rachel Atherton hosts 200 female riders in the 5th Red Bull Foxhunt

It was two days of fun, comradery, and awesome riding in Rachel’s hometown

This weekend saw 200 female mountain bikers take to the hills of Machynlleth in Wales for the 5th Red Bull Foxhunt – an “upside down” mass start race where six-time World Champion Rachel Atherton, aka “The Fox”, chases down the two-wheeled “Hunters” in two days of fun, comradery, and awesome riding in Rachel’s hometown.

Practice is an integral part of this event with Rachel on hand to coach, advise on line choices, and generally, inspire the group. When it was time for the race, Rachel gave the field around 30 seconds head start, but still managed to overtake all but 40 of the riders on a challenging course designed and built by her partner Olly Davey. The trail included open moorland, technical roots and rocks through the woods, and some steep chutes.

I love showing people how fantastic the riding in my hometown can be! It’s been a perfect weekend, the sun shone for us, and the track was amazing with plenty of line choices; everyone really pushed themselves, and everyone had massive smiles on their faces!

The race run was the best everybody has ridden all weekend, the atmosphere at the finish was 100% stoke! I’m proud of everybody here.

Katie Wakely, a first-time “Hunter”, took the victory:

I’m really pumped to be here and riding at my first Red Bull Foxhunt, it feels amazing to win, and the event format is awesome!
