Toon Aerts wins first World Cup at the home of Trek Bikes

Aerts will wear the the World Cup leader's jersey for round 2 in Iowa

There was no better place for Toon Aerts (Telenet-Fidea) to win his first World Cup than on the home turf of sponsor Trek Bikes in Waterloo, Wisconsin.

The 24-year-old Belgian made his move in the final three laps of the opening World Cup around the Trek HQ, and had opened a 15-second lead over reigning cyclocross world champion Wout Van Aert by the start of the last lap.

Aerts pushed all the way to the finish, crossing the line 34 seconds clear of Van Aert. Laurens Sweeck (PauwelsSauzen-VGS) was third.

Starting the season in this way is the best thing that can happen. The confidence is there now. The team has had great results in the last three World Cups, so let's get on to the next races!
