Lauren Goss and Ben Kanute score wins at Bay area classic
One of the most iconic races in the triathlon scene delivered a set of performances to remember, with Trek Factory Racing’s Lauren Goss and Ben Kanute taking a pair of wins. The race is held in California’s Bay area, in often unpredictable conditions.
From the start, buzz was big for Trek Factory Racing member Ben Kanute, who was showing great form coming into the race, and would eventually take the win in a time of 1:30:09.
This year’s curve ball included a canceled swim portion due to high winds. Competitors were unfazed, and racing began with the bike portion. Ben Kanute went into the race ready to win no matter what. In his own words,
"Obviously it was disappointing that the swim was cancelled, especially since that is a huge strength for me. I just refocused though and wanted to attack the course. I knew I was fit, and I wanted to show that. I set out at a very solid pace on the bike and caught Cam Dye by the halfway point. It was a TT start and I went off second, 30 sec behind Cam. Once I came off the bike, I just focused on running my best race. There were a lot of good runners on the start list and they kept me honest all the way to the finish. It was a few tense min after the race calculating the time gaps, but I was super happy to get the win!"
Lauren Goss scored a solid win on the day by pushing herself into places she normally doesn’t go, winning in a time of 1:42:06. A course filled with technical quirks, Alcatraz presents unique challenges for riding and running. In Lauren’s own words,
"Today was all about taking chances. I had no chance of winning being conservative on the bike or hesitating on the descents. I went for it and I am so glad I had the running legs to take the tape"
Perennial strong-woman Holly Lawrence lined up for the race as well, scoring a solid 3rd place finish in a time of 1:43:36.
