Jakob Egholm signs with Trek-Segafredo for 2021

The former Junior World Champion inks a one-year contract as Trek-Segafredo finalizes its 2021 line-up

Trek-Segafredo has added another young talent. Jakob Egholm, the winner of the 2016 Junior World Championships road race in Doha, has signed a one-year contract with the USA-registered WorldTour team. Egholm has spent the last two years with Hagens Berman Axeon, the highly successful Under-23 development team managed by Axel Merckx.

Although unable to race much in this pandemic-stricken year, Egholm has benefitted from rubbing shoulders with WorldTour teams in elite European races over the last few seasons. The 22-year-old Dane will support Trek-Segafredo’s leaders, such as compatriot Mads Pedersen, in various races as he develops his qualities and gains experience racing amongst the world’s elite. The arrival of Egholm marks the fifth Danish cyclist racing in Trek-Segafredo colors next season.

Jakob Egholm: “I’m so excited to join this team, it’s honestly a childhood dream come true. I still can’t believe it, but I’m super excited to be a part of the gang from January 1st. I’ve watched this team on television racing in the biggest races since it started. I hope I can do well on this team, and I am really eager to show my potential. I’ll do my very best to be a good teammate and help the team to some great victories.

“I think the Classics races should suit me, but I’m really open to learn and grow within this team. I still feel like a young, inexperienced guy, and I don’t know exactly what my abilities are; I think it’s pretty open still. I’m sure with all the great directors and riders that we can make a good path for me. I’m joining a growing Danish group within Trek-Segafredo; there are some great guys, and I get along with them very well already. It’s going to be really nice to have a Danish imprint on this team, and I think we can do some exciting stuff together.”

Luca Guercilena, General Manager: “Looking into young riders, Jakob is a former Junior World Champion and can certainly add value to the team. We believe that with us he can develop to be an important rider for the future. He has proven to be a good team player, and that will be his role next year.

“We are looking forward to 2021 to be consistent in Classics and improving on what we have achieved in 2020. For the Grand Tours, we will have Nibali, Mollema, and Ciccone, who, after a difficult season, will be ready to fight again for big results. Then, we will focus on the group of young riders we have to take another step on the way to success.”

The signing of Jakob Egholm completes the 2021 Trek-Segafredo men’s team, which will number 29 riders from 12 nationalities.
