Two more years representing Trek-Segafredo for Skujiņš, Brambilla, Mosca and Moschetti; one more year for De Kort
“In a season like the one that is about to end, we thought it was important to send a signal of confidence and incentive to the whole group. Year after year, we have been able to consolidate a sports project that has given important signs of improvement and results, especially this year. We have chosen to give continuity to a balanced mix of youth and experience as a means to make a further quality leap,” explained Luca Guercilena, General Manager.
Since joining the Team in 2018, Toms Skujiņš has cemented his position as a valuable member. The 29-year-old Latvian has picked up a string of impressive results during his three years at Trek-Segafredo, including a memorable win at the Tour of California in 2018, a one-day victory at the Tre Valli Varesine, as well as claiming the Latvian National Championships in both the road race and time trial. In 2020, Skujiņš rode his third Tour de France where he came agonizingly close to a stage win in Loudenvielle but had to settle for second place. The amiable all-rounder has begun to take on a road captain role within the team, a responsibility which he relishes.
“Ever since I joined Trek-Segafredo, I’ve been really happy with how the Team has supported and put confidence in me and helped me to grow as an athlete. I’m especially happy during this odd season to sign for two more years and stay with this Team that I’ve been part of for three years now. It’s especially nice because of the way Trek as a company supports the team. It’s not just the Team, but also the company that we’re involved with. I’ll definitely miss going back to Trek headquarters in Wisconsin this year to play ice hockey with the Trek employees,” said Skujiņš.
“The Team works with great partners, not just Trek as the team owner. For example, the relationship we have with Santini and SRAM is about developing good products, but also getting the best out of both the equipment and us. It’s nice to be part of a team that doesn’t only chase results, but actually develops products and cares about what they put out in the world.
In the next two years, one of the things I really want to do, is to finally race the Giro. I want to keep going in the same direction I have been, occasionally I get to be road captain and occasionally I get to go for results, be that in the Ardennes or in some stage races. Overall, I want to be as useful to the Team as I can be, no matter what the race.”
Matteo Moschetti will continue his development with Trek-Segafredo for a further two years, having completed two years as neo-pro with the Team. The Italian sprinter started 2020 with a bang by taking his first professional victories at the Challenge Mallorca series, but shortly after tasting success the youngster suffered a broken hip at Etoile de Bessèges. Moschetti spent most of the year recovering and rehabilitating and is still on his way back to top form.
Additionally, Gianluca Brambilla and Jacopo Mosca have renewed their contracts through 2022. The Italian pair recently raced their home Grand Tour in support of Vincenzo Nibali. Brambilla was showing some of his best climbing performances in recent years until an unfortunate crash and knee injury put him out of the race. Mosca ended his season in fine form with top-five results at the Coppa Sabatini and Giro dell’Appennino and third on Stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia.
Team veteran Koen de Kort will also continue to pin numbers onto a Trek-Segafredo jersey for one more year. The experienced road captain, who is currently racing the Vuelta a España, will continue to share his vast expertise with his younger teammates through 2021.
